Healthy Tips for American Heart Month

Are you prioritizing your heart health?

Some risk factors for heart disease are beyond our control, but many can be regulated with healthy habits and preventive care. In fact, it might be easier than you think to improve your chances of enjoying a longer and healthier life.

In honor of American Heart Month, let’s take a look at a few ways we can all take better care of our health and our heart.

The Power of Prevention

First, make sure you understand what your insurance covers so you can sign up for regular checkups. You’ll want to stay on top of:

  • Blood Pressure. Get it checked at least once a year, and try to make sure it stays in a healthy range.
  • Cholesterol and Triglycerides. High levels can raise the risk of coronary artery disease and heart attacks.
  • Sugar Levels. Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in your heart, which increases your risk of heart disease.
  • Your Weight. Keep it under control to help keep high blood pressure and cholesterol at bay.

A Healthy Lifestyle

Of course, staying healthy isn’t just about doctors and tests. You should also:

  • Exercise regularly. Find an activity that works for you and stick to it.
  • Eat for your health. Try to choose lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and avoid excessive sugars and saturated fats.
  • If you smoke, find a way to quit. Smoking raises blood pressure and is a major heart disease risk factor.
  • Manage stress. Find ways to relax and limit sources of anxiety if you can.
  • Prioritize sleep. Most adults need at least seven hours per night.

Hopefully, taking steps like these and making the lifestyle changes recommended by professionals can help you reduce your risk of heart disease.
