How to Prepare for a Visit to the Doctor

When it comes to going to the doctor, most of us just want to get in and out of the office as quickly as possible.

But whether you’re there for a specific complaint or for your annual physical, you might as well make the most of your time and insurance, right?

Here’s how to prepare for your next visit, ask the right questions, and leave the office knowing you did your best.

1. Know Your Plan

If you’re seeing a health care professional for the first time, check your insurance plan. Verify that your provider is in your network and find out about any copays. If you can, fill out paperwork and get any necessary verification in advance.

2. Prepare Your Questions

Write down all of the questions you have the day before. Your doctor should be able to discuss your medications, specialist needs, preventive screenings and health concerns.

3. Get There Early

Arriving early to your appointment allows you to talk to the receptionists or nurses about any issues you may have. You can provide them with any additional information they may need. It’s also a good time to verify costs and billing processes.

4. Take Notes

Bring your list of questions and then document the answers as you go. You might want to bring a friend or family member with you to serve as another pair of eyes and ears. If you’re worried about remembering all the details, ask if you can record the appointment on your phone.

5. Stay on Track

Try to keep small talk to a minimum so that you have time to cover everything. Before leaving, ask if you can call with any follow-up questions.
