Tips for Staying Healthy at Home

Most of us are staying home right now to help stop the spread of COVID-19. But for regular telecommuters, retirees and others, a home-based lifestyle is the norm.

No matter your situation, it’s worth prioritizing healthy habits to help protect your physical and mental well-being.

Aside from being kind to yourself and continuing to practice social distancing, here are a few more ways to do your best to stay healthy:

Take advantage of telemedicine options.

Telemedicine allows you to consult with a health care professional over the phone or via video chat to receive a diagnosis and treatment. This option offers convenience and protection from exposure to germs, and many plans now include it.

Note: As of March 6, 2020, Medicare telehealth services may be used to treat COVID-19.

Work out at home.

Whatever type of exercise you enjoy, there’s probably a way to continue doing it from home. If you’re craving a walk, run or bike ride, you can head outside as long as you maintain the recommended 6-foot distance from anyone who doesn’t live with you. If you’re used to going to a gym or fitness studio, see if they’re offering online classes right now or try a new fitness app.

Set boundaries between work and personal time.

Experienced remote workers recommend getting dressed in the morning, scheduling a lunch and other breaks, setting a hard stop for your workday, and designating a space to work that isn’t your bedroom or family room. Everyone is different, but try to find the boundaries that help you feel productive and protective of your personal time.

Stay connected to your community.

Feeling isolated? Make an effort to connect with friends and family through video chat, calls and texts. Want to help someone in need? Check the local paper for community opportunities or take a look at these trustworthy charities to find out how you can pitch in.
